2014-07-09 Hunter's Brook -Triad after Hurricane Arthur

On this entire hike, the only other people I saw were two park workers with chain saws, clearing the trail of fallen trees from the hurricane; there were plenty to be cleared. This was a 3.5 mile hike beginning on the south end of the island (where the storm hit most severely), crossing over the Triad (3 small peaks), then down the other side and connecting to  the Bubble-Jordan Pond Path leading to the south end of Jordan Pond.

The trail initially follows Hunters Brook.

There were countless fallen trees and washed out stream banks.

Fallen trees over the trail.

This tree was snapped off at the base.
Unfortunately, the stream crossings were pretty washed out also - but somehow I made it across all of them without getting my boots wet. Where the trail leaves the brook, it climbs steeply up a drainage channel which was completely wiped out with hazardous and slippery footing. Not good when I am the only soul around and no cell service here on the south end beneath Cadillac Mountain. I was very happy when I reached the open granite ledges at the summit of the triad.

Nice views from the top of Triad looking towards Seal Harbor

The modest summit of Triad

Granite steps

Mossy granite

These trees look to have been leaning for quite some time

Cedar planks through low-lying pathways

Now heading through old growth woods to Jordan Pond

Fading sunlight through the trees

And then there is magnificent Jordan Pond

This deer had no fear

I stepped to the left side

Amazingly, it seemed she might stroll past me on the trail, but she turned into the bushes

Continuing around the south end of the pond

Sun about to set behind Penobscot

At Jordan Pond House to catch the shuttle
