Briarcliffe in Myrtle Beach is a very nice resort with all the amenities, but truly I would have prefered to stay at the state park. However, it was going to be about $35/nt vs. our $10/nt Coast to Coast price at the RV park. We always have to make a choice when planning our travels, between state parks we would prefer to stay at (nature trails, lovely roomy sites in a natural setting) or an RV park with lots of amenities but still, an RV park. If the cost were equal, I would almost always choose a state park or national park campground. However, with our camping club memberships, the reduced RV park price is often much less than the state park. So, we take day trips to explore the state parks...
Friends at Jolly Roger highly recommended
Huntington Beach State Park, so we spent a day exploring the park, visitor center, beach, boardwalks, and nature trails. Very different from the California park of the same name! The campground includes water / electric hookups, and the 3-mile-long white sandy beach is full of shells. There are several short trails, great birding, the "Bike The Neck" bike trail, plus you can take a tour of
Atalaya , the historic winter home of Anna Hyatt Huntington where they hold the prestigious Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival each September.
A loggerhead turtle rescued from this state park and named "Huntington" was rehabilitated at South Carolina Aquarium and was just released. Story here:
