2014-05-27 Another day off, short hike on Great Head, then a nature cruise

We walked a short trail around "Great Head" to Sand Beach in the morning. There are several short trails circling and crossing over Great Head, which is the highest headlands on the Atlantic coast north of Brazil. We made quick time and headed back to Bar Harbor as we were scheduled for a boat cruise.

We met up with friends to catch the Nature Cruise from the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company. Later I hope we'll get out to do their Whale and Puffin tour, and the Lighthouse Tour. We sell these at a discount to our guests and it is helpful to be familiar and talk intelligently about what each tour encompasses. Plus, it is a tremendous life experience! On our nature tour, we saw several Bald Eagles (abundant here), Peregrine Falcons (which are plentiful and the reason for several trail closures due to nesting sites on the cliffs), harbor porpoise, and countless Harbor Seals around Egg Rock Light Station where the seal population has seen a huge resurgence. Towards the end of our cruise, we saw the Starfish Enterprise near one of the Porcupine Islands, doing a "dive-in theater" excursion (which I hear is a fantastic trip, especially for kids).

It was very cold in the wind on the water!
