We got a good show, and saw some people learn a valuable lesson climbing where they shouldn't be. It wasn't too many years ago tragedy occurred: a group of tourists were swept into the water by a rogue wave and one little girl drowned. This is video from just before the rogue wave from Hurricane Bill in 2009; the folks were apparently walking away from the water up the path when the wave washed over them.
It's fun to watch the waves and a thrill to hear the thunder, but don't put yourself too close, as the waves occasionally come in much bigger when the conditions are just right. Even in wave-free conditions, caution should be exercised - this is a natural area with steep drop offs on the edge of the rocks. One of our guests saw her little boy fall of a ledge (terrifying moment!); they spent their day in the ER and the remainder of their vacation nursing his head and leg injuries.
What a gorgeous day! |
Looking east towards Schoodic Peninsula in the distance |
Approaching Thunder Hole, people surrounding it |
Stairway closed down to the walkway below |
The folks at the top of the stairway are going to get wet |
And this is why the walkway below is closed |
Completely awash in powerful waves |
Folks sitting high above are still at risk |
These folks have chosen to climb the rock tower |
Now they are quickly reconsidering their position |
This young lady will not be here long |
Time to move |
And....folks at the top of the stairway get a good soaking |
Waves are subsiding after high tide but still dangerous |
Could easily wash you away |
