2014-04 Day 1 in Washington DC - Museums, east end of the mall

We just missed the Cherry Blossom Festival, but along with most of the blossoms, most of the crowds were gone. Our first day in DC was Friday, crowded but not horrible. We spent the day visiting museums on the east end of the mall, including: American Indian, National Air & Space, American History, Natural History, National Gallery of Art....we certainly didn't have time to visit them all, nor spend too much time in any one museum. There was a security line entering each one, but that moved pretty fast. One highlight for us was seeing the Hope Diamond in the Natural History Museum.

The line for the National Archives was several hours long! So that evening, I attempted to sign up for "timed entry" online for our second day, but it was sold out. Heads up for anyone planning a trip to DC - be sure you reserve timed visit entries well in advance of your trip (reservation cost per person is $1.50); otherwise you are waiting for hours. Disappointed that we missed out on this!

We made a point of taking pb&j sandwiches, snacks and water, so we managed to not spend any money in DC. We took LOTS of pictures - I posted just a few here and many more on this link.
