July 13-17: Rocky Mountain National Park

After 5 days at Hermit Park, we headed out early to get a first-come first served spot in RMNP. Morraine Park Campground was full, so we snagged a spot at Glacier Basin, where most of the loops are nearly devoid of trees because of the Mountain Pine Beetle. We were fortunate that our campsite had some trees. Our first night, we headed over to Morraine Park campground to meet Brett and Olivia for dinner; they had a beautiful, fairly private campsite and we enjoyed playing Mexican Train Dominos - another great thing they've introduced us to, that we plan to continue!

The next morning, Gary drove to Lake Mary (just outside RMNP in Estes Park) for some fishing. He had a whole herd of deer come down to the lake right next to him, and watched them wade and swim in the lake. Unfortunately, I had the camera!

I went for a hike that morning from our campground to Sprague Lake (2.5 miles round trip) and then headed off on another trail from Glacier Basin campground to the YMCA riding stables (outside the park) and then back in the park to Morraine Park (about 5 miles). It is sad to see the "fall colors" on the hills and know it is due to the number of dead trees.

Coming into Morraine Park, there are lots of signs about the dangerous water, and lots of foolish tourists climbing on the rocks.
Looking across Morraine Park, the views are fabulous and the flowers were plentiful.

On Thursday night, we met Brett and Olivia, and Brett's parents who were down from Minnesota, at the free concert in the park (brass quintet from Denver), again in Estes Park.  Brett's parents are terrific, and we really enjoyed spending time with them! When we meet up with Brett and Olivia again, hope we'll get to visit with his parents again.
