July 6: scenic drive relocating from 11-mile to Golden Gate Canyon SP

It was a beautiful drive from Eleven Mile SP along the Collegiate Peaks up Hwy 9, through the small but cute town of Alma, through Breckenridge (note the ski area above)...unfortunately, the whole trip up the hill we were stuck behind the same stinky truck and had no opportunity to pass as we were towing the 5th wheel.

Then at the junction with the big hwy 70 (hadn't seen a 4 lane highway in a very long time!) is the Dillon Reservoir and the town of Frisco. We will be staying on this reservoir at the end of July, and the area has a free shuttle which is always a huge plus!

Then from Frisco up Hwy 70 (and I do mean UP!) was quite a climb with the RV, and through the very long Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel...
After a quick stop for groceries in Idaho Springs, we were off up a smaller highway (and smaller tunnels) on our way to Golden Gate Canyon State Park....

Then suddenly around the bend on this two lane windy road, is a little Las Vegas - the town of Blackhawk with all the big casinos - it was shocking, garrish, out-of-place...though they have made a nice attempt at beautification, with city park, landscaping, sculptures...

Then, around another bend, we're back to nature...ahhhhh....meadows, trees, lakes, mountains....and our next campground.

Settled in at our campsite at Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Quiet, secluded, densely wooded with scattered ponds, streams, and meadows, this campground has been voted in the top 100 best campgrounds in the US, and in the top 10 most romantic spots in the United States! Gary kept saying (sarcastically of course!) oh, isn't this romantic...wow this is so romantic....hahaha!  I thought it was fantastic though, and will post some pics to share - the wildflowers were the best we've seen yet! Wish we could have stayed more than just two nights...but we're on a tight schedule. (Don't know how that happened, but there it is - The Schedule - we're rushing from one spot to the next, trying to fit it all in)
