2014-09-24 A trip to the "real" downeast - Eastport and Lubec

Still checking out the neighborhood, we decided it was time to take a day trip up north, to see the real "down east". About 30 miles northeast up the coast, we passed through Cherryfield, named originally for the wild cherries on the banks of the Narraguagas River, but now it is better known for blueberry fields, as the self-proclaimed "Blueberry capitol of the world".

Continuing up the coast, we past through many beautiful coastal towns of Maine, on our way up to Eastport and Lubec. Eastport is the northernmost town on the Maine coast; from Moose Island, you can look across a mile-wide strait to Campobello Island on the Bay of Fundy, in New Brunswick, Canada. Would have loved to visit Campobello to see the Roosevelt summer home, but without our passports, could not cross the bridge! So we strolled around in Eastport, took in the view across the strait, had some coffee at Dastardly Dick's (wicked good), and went for a short hike at Shackford Head State Park.

This statue was created and left behind from a 2001 reality show filmed here. It was a whodunit contest, and the $100,000 winner was a New York firefighter. Tragically, he died that September when the twin towers fell. Knowing this story, this statue makes me cry.

From Eastport, we headed back south and around Cobscook Bay to the town of Lubec, Maine - the easternmost town in the US. From here, you can drive over a bridge to Campobello Island, New Brunswick. We drove around town, had a quick lunch, then headed to Quoddy Head State Park, which is the easternmost point in the US. This lighthouse and park were beautiful, with rocky beaches, fantastic views and several hiking trails. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and we had a nice scenic tour of downeast Maine. Then on the way home, we stopped by Tidal Falls Preserve to see the rip-roaring "falls" that reverse with the tide.
Now on to Lubec
